Line spacing in Paragraphs

Line spacing in Paragraphs:

Line Spacing in paragraphs is the white space between two adjacent lines. So Line spacing can change o increase the readability of text in a paragraph. Lines spacing can single-space,double-space or set to any spacing. Single spacing is default.

  1.  Changing Line spacing using Task Pane:

The following procedure is use to change line spacing using task pane:

  • Select the text to format.
  • Click Format > Reveal Formatting. The Reveal Formatting Task pane will appear.
  • Click on any of the blue links under paragraph heading.

2.   Changing line spacing using Menu:

The following procedure is use to change line spacing using Menu:

  • Select the required paragraph.
  • Select format  >  paragraph. The paragraph dialog box appears.
  • Click Indents and Spacing tab.
  • Press an appropriate option in Line spacing and At lists from spacing area.
  • Click OK to apply.

3. Changing line spacing using Formatting Toolbar:

The following procedure is use to change line spacing using Toolbar:

  • Select the text to format.
  • Click on Line Spacing button on formatting Toolbar.
  • Select an option from the drop-down menu.

4. Change Line Spacing using Keyboard:

The following procedure is use to change line spacing using Keyboard:

  • Select the paragraphs to change line spacing.
  • Press the appropriate shortcut key to set the desire spacing.
Short Key Spacing
CTRL+1 Single line spacing
CTRL+2 Double line spacing
CTRL+5 1.5 line spacing

Adjust Paragraph Spacing:

Paragraph spacing feature is use to set the amount of space between and after each paragraph. It is set in Paragraph dialog box.  Paragraph spacing is measure in points. There are 72 points in inch. Extra spacing between paragraphs makes a document easier to read.

The following procedure is use to change paragraph spacing:

  • Select the paragraph and select Format > paragraph.
  • Enter a value in Before box to set spacing before paragraph.
  • Enter a value in after box to set spacing after paragraph.
  • Click OK.

Indenting paragraphs:

Indent is the distance between paragraph and page margins. you can adjust indent for individual paragraph. for a group of paragraphs or the margins for the entire document.

Types of  Indents:

Ms word provides four types of indents:

Left Indent               It moves the entire paragraph from the left-hand margin.

Right Indent            It moves the entire paragraph from the Right-hand margin.

First line indents   It inserts space between first line and page margin.

Hanging indents     It means  that the entire paragraph except the first line is indented from the left-     hand margin.

Indent using paragraph Dialog box:

The following procedure is use to indent text using Paragraph dialog box.

  • Select Format > paragraph. 
  • Select indents and Spacing Tab.
  • Enter measurements in left and Right boxes.
  • Click on special drop-down list to select first line or hanging indent options
  • Enter first line or hanging indent measurement in by box.
  • Click OK.

Indent Using the Keyboard:

The following procedure is use to indent text using Keyboard.

Press To Indent a Paragraph
CTRL+M To the next tab stop
CTRL+SHIFT+M To the previous tab stop
CTRL+T As a hanging indent to the next tab stop
CTRL+SHIFT+T As a hanging indent to the previous tab stop
